This is an unusual photo of an iconic landmark in the "New Town" of Columbia, Maryland. The much-photographed People Tree sculpture at Lakeside was created to represent the strongly-held commitment of Jim Rouse, the planned community's founding father, to build a town that fostered the connection of its people to each other. Columbia was to be more than a town. It was to be a place that valued diversity, involvement, creativity, a sense that anything was possible if we are willing to work together for the common good.
